What embroidery is for

The name. Thread sits in the cloth, survives handling, boxing and thirty Decembers, and reads like it belongs on the cuff.

It is also unforgiving — unpicking leaves a shadow — which is why names get checked letter against letter before sewing.

What printing is for

Pictures. Dye-sublimation puts the image IN the cloth, so photos stay sharp and patterns run edge to edge through the seams without cracking.

It is also the budget route, honestly stated, for short runs and fan designs.

The combination that wins

A printed body carrying the design, an embroidered cuff carrying the name.

Each technique doing its own job is why the best stockings cost less than doing either badly twice.

The one thing to refuse

Vinyl-pressed lettering — it cracks, peels and dates the stocking in three seasons.

If a quote can’t tell you whether the name is thread or vinyl, that is the answer.
